Toddlers and puppies! Toddlers are unpredictable and wild right? I thought I would show you a personal video of my daughter and one of our pups. Domino is about 4 1/2 months now. Boxers, especially puppies can definitely play rough and be crazy too. My daughter LOVES this - However there are rules and it's my job to set them both up for appropriate interactions and safety. Here are a couple things to note in video: 1. Domino wants the dog toy that she has in her mouth. (YES.....a dog toy in her mouth )He is not allowed to try to get it unless she gives it to him or throws it for him. This would be a "leave it" and/or "wait" 2. I do not allow him to get on top of her even if she is rolling around on the ground. He will be a big dog. This will not be okay later and could easily get too rough. Doesn't happen in video but toddler is not allowed to jump on or get on top of pups either. I tell him "off" and he ends up sitting patiently. So proud of him! Other ground rules for dog/kid play: *No chasing. Kids cannot chase dog- dog cannot chase kids. I know! It's such a fun game and wears everyone out. Teaches very bad habits. *No hitting, climbing, riding or jumping on dog! *No mouthy play biting - no matter how gentle! *Hold tug toys down low and not above head so pup doesn't jump up to get it accidentally scratching or jumping on kiddo. *If pup keeps avoiding or walking away to lay down- it's time for a break and ideally crate time for pup for a nap. Teach kids to leave sleeping/resting dogs alone Micro- management is the key! Never, EVER allow young children and dogs together unsupervised. They are both learning in every interaction. Now let me see your littles with your pups! And maybe we need a playdate so my girl doesn't act so feral!
