The big news is I'm pushing for funds. I just put a down payment on a 50'x15' steel building BAT BARN east side 15x15 rescue lab house the bats and a door going to the flight 30' flight cage height maybe 10' width not sure probably to cover the window for a winter roost so when they are strong the flight can be open and they can leave. bottom 35' will be a workshop with all the saws welder compressor sandblaster and other tools for bat houses and other projects. west side ups...Continue reading
Anyone with bats coming into your place it's best to wait tell the fall to do an exclusion it's almost too late now to do them. May 8 we had the first pup show up last year. This year was colder than last year so would guess we might have an additional week for the first pup. There are several companies that exclusions Oklahoma Wildlife Control can do them 918-367-9060 get it done before the pups come out. Big Browns will be the first with a gestation period of 60 days Red Bats are 80-85. The bats could have impregnated themselves as early as March 22 looking at the temps on the graph. 2 months later they will have pups. If you do an exclusion with pups they will get trapped and you will have one smelly place when the pups die. Believe me, one dead pup can smell up a whole house.
Just upgraded by ecology/adult feeding charts. these greatly help to determine when pup season should start for each species if you make them for your area for a couple years. I have a pdf that shows that if anyone interested I'll post it. these are for Big Browns and Eastern Reds my main 2 bats I figure the temps are pretty solid with the forecast and last years looks like it's springtime here starting yesterday 3-22 and figuring the gestation period assuming the bats are ab...out now and they released their sperm it gives a pretty accurate timeline. Between March 14-22 low temps are steady above 45 so pregnancy should occur maybe. 60 days for Big Browns put it about May 21 first big brown last year was May 8 but we had warmer winter and Red bats is 80 - 85 days of gestation or dob around June 10 last year 1st was June 14 pretty close. Of course, we will use growth charts with pups I'll be updating those next with this year temperatures as well stay tooned. See more
I usually have about 10 bats to overwinter this year is slow only 2 and I've got 9000 worms to feed them guess I'll be making a lot of blend for the coming pup season. Australia bats are literally falling of the trees from the heat here we are going to have record colds some places -50 even bats will have a problem with that extreme. hopefully, it's only for a few days.
going to release most of my bats in the next day or two depending on weather figured I'd post this summary so I'd have it.http://fewerr.org/PDF/2017_Active_Bat_Summary.pdf
