Our first feature for Women’s History Month is very fitting. Researched and written by Phillip Carroll Morgan, with an introduction by Judy Goforth Parker, Dynamic Chickasaw Women presents the lives of women who had an impact on Chickasaw history during the periods of removal from the Homeland, difficulties in Indian Territory, and the tumult of Oklahoma’s early statehood days. Some of the women are widely known and celebrated among members of the Chickasaw Nation today, wh...ile the stories of some provide surprising revelations. The pages are filled with history and photos sure to make you thankful for our dynamic Chickasaw women. Chapter One: The Genesis of Women's Property Rights in the United States: Betsy Love's Defense Chapter Two: The Hamilton Sisters and the OPC Cardinals Chapter Three: "Sadie" Chapter Four: Lushanya, Songbird of the Chickasaw Chapter Five: Ataloa, Philosopher, Educator, Humanitarian https://chickasawpress.com/Boo/Dynamic-Chickasaw-Women.aspx

Have you ever wondered what goes into writing a book? Our in-house author, Stanley Nelson, shared his writing process in a nutshell. Once you’ve decided what you want to write about, whether fiction or non-fiction, the next step is research. How much you need depends on what you write about. Even if the subject of your work is a fantasy, it helps to learn about one pertinent thing or another. If your work is non-fiction, you will do a great deal of digging and fact-checkin...g, perhaps even interviewing. Sometimes you won’t be finished with research before you start writing, again depending on what you write about. When you finish your first draft, and sometimes before, the real work begins. The process we call revision, especially for quality manuscripts, takes longer and requires more hard work than anything that comes before it. You and your editor, if you have one, will go over your work at least dozens of times, often far past a hundred. You will check everything from grammar and syntax to facts and sequence, and more. Once you and your editor are satisfied that no further improvement is possible, you are ready to submit your manuscript. What happens next? How do they go from Word document to something tangible? Our book design and content specialist, Gentry Fisher, will share next month!
