"My name is Letecia Burkett, I’m 26 years old and I’m a pup in the tattoo industry. Tattooing has been my dream for as long as I can remember. And everyday I go... to work I never really feel like it’s a job because I get to do something I love, and no matter what is going on in my personal life as soon as I walk through the door nothing else matters. There’s so much more that goes into being a professional in the tattoo industry than just the artwork you do, from being that someone that your client can vent to without judgement to watching a womans relationship with her body change... And not to mention one of the best parts are the friendships I’ve created from the one on one time with my clients. To me the most important roll I have as an artist is maintaining a clean and sterile environment to ensure that my client is safe. A persons health is most important and though it is my number one priority it shouldn’t be a worry at all to my client, when they are planning to get a tattoo they are already filled with excitement, the nervousness of making a permanent decision, and the adrenaline that comes from getting new ink, the last thing that should be on their mind is whether or not their health is at risk. So I take that very serious. I think the hardest part of my job is knowing I’m inflicting pain on people, I don’t like to hurt people so I constantly feel the urge to apologize, but at the end of the day everyone knows the pain is just part of it, and it’s just a temporary price you pay to have something that lasts forever. Above all I am most grateful for the boss that I have, and how He has been patient with me and continues to do so everyday. And for anyone who knows my boss Nate Flippin, they know that he has an unbelievably busy life and the fact that he still dedicates time to pass his knowledge of tattooing on to me is incredible. Getting to apprentice under him has been an honor and working at Flippin Ink is something I am very proud of. As of right now and for the foreseeable future Flippin ink is my second home. Maybe someday like any artist would, I’ll want to own my own tattoo shop but Flippin Ink would probably not exist anymore for that to become reality, because I’m very happy where I’m at and because of the opportunity I’ve been given, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Though like I said I’m new in the industry, I’m willing to take any idea or dream a person might have and turn it into a piece of art that they can wear forever, and be proud of. I’m passionate about the work I do and treat each design as if it were going on my own body, and my love for this industry will never change." See more
