Is it best to burn brush piles while it is snowy? In Oklahoma, May and June are actually the safest months to burn brush piles. This is because vegetation is gr...owing with high water content and therefore less flammable. Ideal weather conditions with winds less than 15mph and humidity above 40% are common. Reasons NOT to burn in snow and freezing temperatures: Fuels: In cold weather, fires burn more slowly and can burn brush incompletely because it is damp. Pastures are also dormant and extremely flammable. Forecast: Brush piles often burn for days or even weeks, possibly lasting much longer than the snow. Know if conditions for the next 3-4 days are favorable, not simply the day of the burn. After snow melts, pastures can dry quickly with high winds common in winter and spring allowing escapes to spread quickly. Fire Watch: In cold weather suppression equipment may not work properly. Know your availability and plan to spend time ensuring that no hot spots or escapes happen.
