What's the big deal about parvo. Well, parvo is a virus that can live in the soil for years when an infected canine leaves a poop sample. Another dog can pick it up, for example, when it steps on it and licks it's paws. If the dog isn't up to date on its vaccines, or too young to have its full puppy series, the virus can attack the intestines and cause them to slough their lining. This creates the classic symptoms of vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Dogs can quickly become dehydrated/malnourished and possibly die. If you have a puppy make sure to keep it isolated until a couple weeks after it receives its full series (8, 12, 16 weeks). Older dogs with unknown vaccine history should be vaccinated and boostered once in 3 to 4 weeks as well as yearly for best protection.
