What does it mean to shoe for the individual hoof & horse? It means knowing that each horse is unique! At first glance this shoe might seem off/crooked, however, if you draw a line you notice that the shoe is oriented with the line of travel or the direction the leg moves when it is in action. When this horse moves, the shoe will work with the horse to promote better mobility.
When farriers and vets work together as a team we can accomplish amazing work! Using X-rays, we were able to properly evaluate the feet to create a trimming and shoe plan to help him walk away a happy horse today. He has a long way to go but we’re looking forward to being a part of his progress.
Did you know there are three distinct pathways to the development of laminitis: 1. Endocrinopathic laminitis (90%) 2. Sepsis-associated laminitis (12%) 3. Sup...port-limb laminitis (10-15% of horses with significant orthopedic conditions). All three forms result from injury to, and ultimate failure of, lamellar epithelial cells that result in either lamellar epithelial stretching and/or failure of epithelial cell adhesions between cells and their dermal connections with the basement membrane. While all these cellular disruptions can occur in any case of laminitis, each of the three pathways has a predominant pathological footprint. Endocrinopathic laminitis develops mostly due to cellular stretch from disruption of the cytoskeleton. Sepsis-associated laminitis and support limb laminitis result primarily from loss of cell adhesions of the hemidesmosome and desmosomes.
It’s the time of year to start keeping an eye out for thrush! Thrush is an infection of the central and lateral sulcus of the frog of the horse's foot, most often involving bacterial infection, occasionally fungal infection. Thrush can start as a mild infection, but can have disastrous consequences if left untreated. What can you do if you think your horse has thrush? Clean and wash the area with a mild soap, and call your farrier/veterinarian to guide you through treatment. Prevention is the best medicine! Did you know we carry thrush & seedy toe prevention kits? Ask about it at your next appointment!
Lots of new tools ready to use! These are called punches. They are used to create nail holes in the shoe. Who’s ready for some custom shoes?
Always busy in the home shop after hours! Working on some cool new projects: 1. Hand made punches for building more shoes! Always need more tools around here. 2. 2 piece bar shoe, a different approach to the shoe many of you have seen on your horses! It might look a little rough since it’s only my second attempt but practice will make perfect! This is a great shoe and can help many horses, just one more tool in the toolbox to help our four legged clients!
