A note to visual artists. I regularly speak with artists about the importance of saying no and standing their ground. Saying no may cost you an "opportunity" but save you a great deal of heartache. If you receive a request for proposal from an "art consultant" who suggest that you should be happy to create conceptual ideas for free, just say no. If they see value in your work they will be willing to pay for it. Architects do not create building designs for free. Musicians do ...not create radio jingles for free. Authors do not publish literary works for free. As a visual creative professional with the ingenuity to envision the unseen, your work has as much value. Your ideas should come at a cost. An experienced professional art consultant knows better than to insult the value of your creativity. If they seem uninformed, educate them. This is how we create positive change in our industry. Set a baseline for the value of your Creative Concepts and express that value in your reply. If the person on the other end of the line is unwilling to pick up on that conversation there is a 99.9% chance that the opportunity is lacking. Earlier this month the City of Bethany opened its new Bethany Municipal Library and we were smitten to be able to work with artist Nick Bayer of Createco Studios on the installation of his commissioned panel mural measuring 64 ft by 8 ft. Packing a painting is a simple project unless the painting was created by Damien Hirst and is nearly 20 x 20 feet on a 450 lb stretcher system that's suspended from a ceiling... if it's anything like that you're going to want to give us a call. If it's Art, there is no task too big or small.
