Participants who qualify may receive a $50/month discount ($75/month discount on Tribal land) for broadband internet service and a 1 time discount of up to $100 towards the purchase of a desktop, laptop, or tablet devise. More information can be found at acl.gov/CommitToConnect. This is a means tested benefit and participants will need to apply for the benefit and may need to submit proof of eligibility. This benefit is temporary and will end when the grant has run out of fun...ding or 6 months after Health and Human Services declares the pandemic over (whichever comes first). Applications can be submitted through a participating broadband service providers, online at GetEmergencyBroadband.org or by mail. Eligibility criteria are households that include Pell Grant recipients, Free or Reduced Lunch Program participants, households that have experienced a substantial loss of income below $99,000 (or $198,000 for joint filers), or households that qualify for LifeLine (To qualify for LifeLine, HHs need to have income less than $135% federal poverty guidelines OR a member of the HH must be a recipient of SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Free Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension & Survivor benefit, or Tribal programs.) FCC Launches Emergency Broadband Benefit Program The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an Emergency Broadband Benefit Program to help households struggling to pay for internet service during the pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, and virtual classrooms. The Emergency Broadband Benefit will provide a discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 ...per month for households on Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute $10-$50 toward the purchase price. The Emergency Broadband Benefit is limited to one monthly service discount and one device discount per household. A household is eligible if one member of the household: Qualifies for the Lifeline program; Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, or did so in the 2019-2020 school year; Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; Experienced a substantial loss of income since February 29, 2020, and the household had a total income in 2020 below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers; or Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating providers' existing low-income or COVID-19 program. The program has been authorized by the FCC, but the start date has not yet been established. The FCC is working to make the benefit available as quickly as possible. Ennis, is warning the public about fraudulent letters threatening suspension of Social Security benefits due to COVID-19-related office closures. We will not suspend or discontinue benefits because our offices are closed to walk-in visitors. Read this and other fraud... advisories. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General is alerting the public about fraud schemes related to COVID-19. For example, scammers are offering COVID-19 tests to Medicare beneficiaries in exchange for personal details, including Medicare information. However, the services are unapproved and illegitimate. Learn about this and other COVID-19 fraud from HHS. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is alerting people about various COVID-19-related fraud and scams. From contact tracing scams to treatment claims, government imposter scams, and fraud related to economic impact payments, learn about all COVID-19-related fraud and scams at ftc.gov/coronavirus/resources, and report the scams you see at ftc.gov/complaint.
