CONDITION OF THE WEEK: HEADACHES Twenty million Americans see their doctors each year because of a headache. Although headaches can be very uncomfortable and temporarily disabling, most are not associated with serious illness. When a person has a headache, several areas of the head can hurt, including a network of nerves that extends over the scalp and certain nerves in the face, mouth, and throat. Rarely, headache is a symptom of a dangerous condition such as cerebral ane...urysm, brain tumor, stroke, TIA, meningitis, or encephalitis. To avoid headaches, employ good health habits. These include adequate sleep, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and good stress management. Quitting smoking is essential in reducing the risks of all headaches. Relaxation and related stress reduction therapies can diminish the frequency and intensity of headaches. It's true you can always take a pain pill for a headache but will that really treat the cause? If you have regular headaches it's important to understand their cause. A recent study of headaches determined chiropractic care was the most effective treatment for headaches on the planet. This indicates that spinal subluxations (misalignments) are at the roots of most headaches. Pain pills might short-circuit the pain signal but they won't correct the misalignment. So using pain pills for headaches are both shortsighted and potentially dangerous for your health. Dangerous not only because you're allowing a condition time to develop but also because pain pills can cause devastating effects to the stomach, kidneys, and liver, to name a few. As a Chiropractic Physician, my job is to search for the cause of your condition. Once we understand why your headaches are there then the proper course of correction is usually evident. Over the years I've seen thousands of patients become permanently free of their chronic reoccurring headaches through natural health care. Chiropractic can help you also. Always seek to find a permanent solution to your health problems. Enjoy life.

CHIROPRACTIC: Your Immune System is Directly Related to Your Spine Your nervous system communicates with the rest of your body through the spinal cord. This means that when your spine is damaged or misaligned, there is an interference with that path of communication, causing pain symptoms and increasing your chances of injury or illness. Your immune system may suffer from this compression of nerve pathways, weakening your body’s natural mechanisms for fighting off illness. A...s a result, studies have shown that chiropractic care designed to relieve stress, pain, and misalignment of the spine improves nerve function and can potentially boost your immune system by 200%. Stress Impacts Your Immune System, and Your Body Can Harbor Stress in the Spine Research shows that stress weakens the immune system: the state of mind affects one’s state of health. Stress-related back pain is one of the most common psychosomatic symptoms because many people tend to carry the stress in their shoulders, neck, and backs. Heightened stress levels can therefore compound with regular back pain complaints, gravely affecting your immune system and leaving you more suspectable both emotionally and physically. While chiropractic care cannot actively cure disease or infection, like other preventative care health practices, a visit with a chiropractor can help strengthen your body’s natural ability to heal and recover from both illness and injury, should it occur.

WELLNESS: WELLNESS, THE BEST HEALTH INSURANCE. Most people understand that preventing disease makes a lot more sense than trying to recover from a chronic disease process. We hear a lot about prevention but most of us feel overwhelmed and are doing very little to protect our health. It's true there are a lot of voices sometimes telling us contradictory things to do to maintain our health. Which one do you follow? Unfortunately, a large percentage of the population feels fru...strated and end up doing very little to nothing. At Keefe Clinic we attempt to stay balanced and offer a direction that is attainable. Eating properly, most people realize that's important yet are unsure what that fully means. We all know exercise is important but sometimes finding the time can be difficult. Rest and relaxation or stress management is something we all understand is important to reduce the potential of health problems. Positive mental and spiritual attitudes we've heard is important. A healthy nervous system is one most of us are totally in the dark about. These five components are what we call the five laws of health. We have a pamphlet on each one of these components if you're interested in further study.

WELLNESS: 1 in 4 pregnancy loss linked to poor paternal health, a new study finds It might surprise you to hear, but estimates suggest about half of all infertility problems are related to the health of the would-be father. Unfortunately, difficulty getting pregnant isn’t the only risk that poor men’s health can cause for couples who are trying to start a family. A recent study published in Human Reproduction reveals just how impactful the father-to-be’s health is on the ou...tcomes of pregnancy. Pregnancy loss is defined as the death of an unborn baby, which can occur at any point during the pregnancy. Research estimates that the unintended loss of a baby occurs as frequently as 1 out of every 4 pregnancies. (Incidentally, the nation just honored Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month this past October.) Now, a new study offers some important insights into why pregnancy loss is so devastatingly common. The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of almost one million U.S. pregnancies that occurred between 2009 and 2016. They discovered that if the father was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome a collection of health problems including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes there was a significantly increased risk of pregnancy loss. Specifically, if men had just one of these components of metabolic syndrome, the risk of pregnancy loss increased by 10 percent. If they had two or three of these components, the risk increased by 15 and 19 percent, respectively. Sources for this article include: Eurekalert.org Semanticscholar.org Pregnancybirthbaby.org.au NOTE: We have seen around 70% success rate using natural healthcare with issues of infertility. I’ve always encouraged both the husband and wife to not only receive chiropractic adjustments but to deal with issues like diet, detoxification, and targeted nutritional therapy for their specific health challenges. Healthy parents usually have healthy children.

IN THE NEWS: Can antibiotic use harm our children? Research says the dangers are real. Tragically, the number of children in the United States living with autism, ADHD, asthma, and allergies (the 4 A’s) has increased over the years. Many parents whose children suffer from these chronic conditions report frequent use of antibiotics during the early stages of their children’s lives. In fact, a study confirmed a link between antibiotic use during the first year of life and th...e development of asthma. Researchers published their findings in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine and revealed that impaired viral immunity and genetic variants on a region of chromosome 17 increase the risk of antibiotic use in early life, leading to later development of asthma. However, other research challenges this finding. In the same issue of The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, scientists reported that the link between asthma and antibiotics is due to the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ as children today are exposed to fewer microbes than in the past. Another research paper published in The Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology pointed out that disruption in gastrointestinal microbiota weakened the immune system causing children to develop asthma. Ear infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses that doctors treat with medications. Sources for this article include: NIH.gov TheLancet.com BeyondPesticides.org NOTE: Independent studies have shown chiropractic is quite effective in dealing with ear infections. Multiple studies have shown antibiotics don’t work for a number of common infections like sinus infections or bronchitis but the most disturbing thing is they have shown they don’t work for ear infections. The average ear infection will last two or three days but with antibiotics, it will last one or two days longer.

IN THE NEWS: SOCIALIZED MEDICINE There’s been a continual push by the Democratic Party for socialized medicine, as nice as free stuff sounds there is no free lunch. Since the government has been getting more involved in healthcare the cost of healthcare has been rising and so to respond to that the government thinks it should take over healthcare. As if the source of the problem can be the fix of the problem. Even with its problems healthcare in the US is considered a stand...ard for around the world and many people come to the US for specific procedures that they can’t get where they live. Innovation in healthcare is something that America’s known for. That innovation comes from a free enterprise system that’s the bedrock of advancements in healthcare. Socialized systems just don’t have the money to keep up with America in its innovative advancements. In the US when you discover some new advancement in healthcare you are rewarded for your dedication and effort. In a socialized system, the reward is not as great thus the amount of Innovation suffers as well. Even though in the first year or so of socialized medicine people will see a benefit that benefit will quickly start to dissipate when it takes longer and longer to see a doctor or when you have to put off the necessary MRI or CAT scan for six months to a year. Doctors who are no longer working for the patient but for the state start to lose the motivation for excellence. If it sounds too good to be true. Run. See more

CHIROPRACTIC: Can Chiropractic Help Asthma Correct spinal alignment and a full range of spinal joint motion support proper nervous system functioning. The nervous system is your master control system. When the spine is misaligned or not moving properly, it can negatively affect your body’s ability to handle irritants that would otherwise not be an issue. Chiropractors don’t treat asthma. They do, however, look at the functioning of the entire body as a result of how well the... spine is moving or not moving. If a patient is suffering from an ailment such as asthma, the chiropractor looks at the level of the spine that is associated with those structures involved. With regard to asthma, if necessary, chiropractors can check and adjust the thoracic spinal segments because the nerves that exit this portion of your spine innervate (or supply) the lungs and bronchial tubes. When the thoracic spine is misaligned or not moving through its full range of motion, it can also impede the ability of the lungs to expand fully with inhalation. So when chiropractors adjust the spine and restore the full range of motion to the thoracic spine, it aids in the lungs’ ability to take in the maximum amount of air possible. While this decrease in movement may seem minimal, all motion counts no matter how small, especially if one is dealing with asthma. Along with relieving nerve pressure nutritional therapy, dealing with allergies and proper breathing techniques are beneficial. So yes, chiropractic may help those with asthma.

IN THE NEWS: Childhood asthma ALERT: Eating THIS food puts children at risk, NEW study reveals Over the past few decades, the incidence of childhood asthma has continued to rise among children within the U.S. According to the CDC, 5.5 million American children currently have asthma. Because those numbers keep increasing, researchers have started digging to find what’s driving the increase. According to a recent study, there’s a link between meat consumption and asthma sym...ptoms in children. Published in the journal, Thorax, Mount Sinai researchers discovered that children’s dietary habits particularly the consumption of cooked meat may play a role in developing the disease. Researchers looked at associations between foods containing advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) which are dangerous toxins and DNA-altering mutagens and respiratory symptoms. Children with higher AGE-intake had greater odds of wheezing, which included wheezing that is severe enough to disrupt exercise and sleep requiring prescription drugs for treatment. They also found that increased consumption of non-seafood meats was associated with wheezing requiring treatment with prescription medicines. Study leaders noted that dietary AGEs, which largely come from cooked meat consumption, appear to increase the risk of wheezing and other childhood asthma symptoms. Researchers consider these findings critical and believe that they can guide recommendations in the future to reduce the prevalence of asthma in children.
