Keratosis Pilaris. What is it?? Keratosis Pilaris is a common, harmless skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. It’s also called chicken skin. It’s caused by the buildup of keratin a hard protein that protects skin from harmful substances and infection. The keratin blocks the opening of hair follicles, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin.... Here are some ways to help treat it! Moisturizer is key, so sleeping with a humidifier is a great idea to keep moisture in the air! Take short warm baths to unclog and loosen build up in the pores. We keep it short so we don’t get too dry. Using a thick body or face lotion is awesome for hydration to smooth and soften the bumps. Avoid tight clothes! Tight clothes can cause friction that irritates your skin. Invest in a chemical exfoliant! Those go deep into your pores to clean them out and unclog build up! Whatever you do, DON‘T PICK. Face Cleansing Mistakes 1. Using a dirty towel to dry or wash your face is putting bacteria back on your clean skin! 2. Cleaning with makeup wipes DOES NOT count as a good cleanse. It doesn’t get everything off of your face!... 3. Using too hot or too cold of water is a no no. Hot water dries out your skin, sending your glands into oil-producing overdrive to combat the sudden dryness. Cold water doesn’t effectively remove dirt and makeup. Use lukewarm water! 4. Bristle brushes harbor bacteria and a lot of them are too abrasive. Use silicone! It’s easier to sanitize and gentle enough for daily use. 5. Always use a cleanser that will help you with your current skin condition/goals. 6. Washing with dirty hands is counter-productive. Always use clean hands to wash your face.
