A CASE FOR THE LASER: After a jumping competition mid-summer, a 10-year-old horse presented off on the right front leg, and thickness in the tendon region appea...red. After examination, it was determined that an ultrasound should be performed to evaluate this area of swelling. It was found that there was irregularity of the fibres of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), extending from the carpal canal distally to mid cannon region including an 18-22% tear in the peripheral aspect of this tendon mid cannon. The horse received 12 laser treatments over the course of the following month while on stall rest. A progress ultrasound was completed 8 weeks after the initial ultrasound and the tear had filled in! The SDFT was smaller than the previous scan (ie less swollen), and the filled in tear had the building blocks to organize in fibers but still needed to strengthen. After a careful rehabilitation program, the horse was able to return to competition successfully! #lasertherapy #laser #lameness #case #performancehorses
