3 Life Saving Nursing Home Tips by Mark A. Cox, attorney at law. If you have a loved one in a nursing home or are thinking about the not so distant future when you will need to decide on whether to place a loved one in a nursing home, I would like to share with you some thoughts. For over 20 years, I have been representing nursing home residents or the family of residents who have been seriously injured or who have died as a result of nursing home neglect or abuse. ... You can Google, Nursing Home Tips and find a host of sites that provide helpful information. In my experience litigating nursing home negligence lawsuits, I believe the following tips are the most important: 1.All things being equal, choose the nursing home that is not-for-profit. They are usually church-affiliated and have a stated purpose of reinvesting their profits back into the home. With all I have seen, I have a problem with for-profit nursing homes that have a goal of making their shareholders a profit. There simply is not enough money to go around to provide adequate staffing and care and still provide the shareholders a profit. 2.Once you have chosen a nursing home, visit, visit, visit, and visit some more. I think the most important way to ensure your loved one is being taken care of properly is to have a presence in the nursing home. The best way to achieve this is to create a visitation schedule with as many family members and friends participating as possible. Think about it. A 75 year old resident may have 3 grown children who may have 3 spouses and two children each. That’s 12 potential visitors. Add nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church friends and you may have many more visitors. Schedule 3 visitors, per day, one per shift. That way the staff will know that your loved one is being watched regularly. You will have a better chance of the staff taking better care of your loved one than another resident that has few visitors or none at all. I know it sounds harsh but it is reality. 3.Finally, get to know the staff on a personal basis. Call them by their first names. Periodically bring them a Sonic drink or some chocolate. Get their birthdays from the Administrator and get them a gift card. Remember, the staff literally has the life of your loved one in their hands. Trust me, these little gestures will set your loved one apart and might make the difference. If you have any questions, I would be happy to visit with you. Call me at 405-205-2756.
