What is different about a National Cemetery vs. any other type? National Cemeteries are maintained by the Department of Veterans' Affairs National Cemetery Administration. There are 155 of them in 42 states and Puerto Rico as well as 34 soldier's lots and monument sites. Not every state has a National Cemetery. Here in Oklahoma, we have two - Ft. Sill and Ft. The Department of Veteran's Affairs maintains 155 national cemeteries in 42 states. In Oklahoma, our national cemetery is Fort Gibson National Cemetery. "Fort Gibson National Cemetery is located in Muskogee County, one mile northeast of Fort Gibson, Okla. It is situated on land that was once part of the military reservation and is within the limits of the Cherokee Nation. Records indicate the area was probably called Ketona prior to 1824."... "When the army abandoned the fort for the second and final time in 1890, the U.S. government disposed of the property, with the exception of the seven-acre national cemetery that remained with the War Department. In 1952, the cemetery acquired 24 acres for expansion, and more recently, an additional 16 acres were acquired in 1994. The original seven-acre cemetery grounds are rectangular in form. At the center is an Officers Circle with the cemetery’s flagpole. Just inside the main gates stands the cemetery’s brick administration building, built in 1990. Several lodges once stood at this location, including an 1870 wooden cottage, an 1878 sandstone lodge built using a design by Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs, and a 1934 brick lodge built in the Dutch Colonial style." Here's a heart-warming story about the Hi-Way Cafe in Vinita, Oklahoma. They have what's called a receipt wall posted in the restaurant. People can pre-pay for a hot meal and post the receipt on the wall. Then someone in need can go to the wall, pick out a receipt and use it for a meal. Lots of people have had questions about the Real ID program in Oklahoma. According to the website, if you want to fly or get inside a federal building, you must have the correct ID. The correct ID includes a passport or passport card. So if you have one of those, don't worry about getting "in line" to get a Real ID.
