Why do we have funeral services? Although funerals have been a part of our history since the beginning of time, many things have changed over the last several years. Some of the changes are wonderful, such as the increased personalization that we see incorporated, while other changes are perhaps not as helpful, such as the abandonment of gathering together at all. It is not uncommon these days to hear or read that a person requested no services. This can present a significa...nt problem for the loved ones left behind, who, while wanting to honor their loved one's wishes, also have a need for the benefits that a funeral service offers. Cultural wisdom acknowledges that funerals are for the living, and the corporate gathering to publicly mourn, surround, and encourage the family serves many purposes. The funeral service is a statement by the family that says, "Someone precious to us has died. We are grieving and invite you to join us in remembering this special life and supporting each other." In other words, a funeral acknowledges death and gives friends, family, and other relatives an opportunity to express the love and respect they feel for someone who was important to them. With our current COVID climate this has been profoundly challenging.
