Corona Virus There has been a concern over if our pets can harbor COVID19. They can serve a fomite which means if someone coughs on the pet's hair the virus will rest there just as it does on counters and door knobs, but your dog or cat can not be infected. They can not actively spread the disease. The Corona virus family is common in many mammals and to a lesser extent, birds. Most of you will remember the SARS virus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) years ago. It a...lso was a corona virus. Cows, pigs, bats, mice hedgehogs, Pangolins, camels, Beluga whales, dogs and cats have there own Corona virus. Some of these viruses affect the respiratory system, others affect the gastro-intestinal track. As you probably have heard COVID19 is thought to have come from bats. Our dogs and cats do not have a Corona virus that will make their owners sick. Our cats have a virus that affects both systems. The dogs have two strains of the same virus one of which affects the intestinal track and the second strain affects the respiratory system. It will appear as a cold. These particular viruses do not cause human illness. Povidone (iodine) scrub does kill corona virus and can be used on your pets but it is important to rinse the animal thoroughly because it too may dry out the skin. This "shampooing" has not been officially been recommended as disinfectant for our pets haircoat but it does kill corona virus. Lather the hair, allow it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing (thoroughly). I have used this scrub on my own dogs to help after they were skunked and the scrub has been used for presurgical cleansing for decades. We are open! Nicholson animal hospital will be taking a cue from other businesses, and will be offering service "curbside" in an effort to keep our staff and our clients safe while COVID is a threat. UPDATE!! She has a great new home!! This sweet girl is up for ADOPTION!! She is spayed, has her rabies, and vaccines. She is potty trained and loves people and... other dogs!! Her owner is in the hospital and unfortunately will not be coming home. Sweet Chloe Anne needs a good loving home!
