106 years ago today, Congress founded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). NACA's contributions led to numerous scientific breakthroughs in the field of aeronautics. NASA would not have been established if it wasn't for their revolutionary work!

On this day in 1940, the Vought XF4U-1 Corsair prototype made its first flight, piloted by test pilot Lyman Bullard. At the time, it had the largest engine driv...ing the biggest propeller ever flown on a fighter aircraft. It had another striking feature, a wing bent gull-shaped on both sides of the fuselage. This arrangement gave additional ground clearance for the large propeller and reduced drag at the wing-to-fuselage joint.
