ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY May 15, 1869: National Women's Suffrage Association (NWSA) is founded. Led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, the NWSA was created after the women's rights movement split over the proposed 15th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution (extending voting rights to black men). One side of the movement supported the amendment while the wing that formed the NWSA opposed it, on the grounds that voting rights be extended to all African Americans and women at the same time.
