Why Circle Time? The importance of circle time or group discussions is seen throughout a child's development in each area. My main goal when conducting circle time is to engage the children I care for in a discussion where I can introduce new information and increase their desire to discover more about that information. What happens next is an experience that encourages the sharing of ideas and thoughts among the children. In this way we learn from each other, not only how to... share ideas, but also to think about ideas in a new way. This encouragement to explore their world and learn new things in every experience is the foundation for their excitement and eagerness to learn. The following are just a few skills that are increased due to circle time. Language and Literacy -New vocabulary is introduced. -Knowledge of sequence of events and reading comprehension is increased through the reading and discussion of stories. -Sounds and rhythm, rhyming and pronunciation. Physical Development -Active songs that require small motor and large motor movement increased physical abilities in finger manipulation, balance and for those kinetic children, retention of concepts. Socio-Emotional -Confidence to speak to a group of peers and offer personal contributions to a conversation or project. -The ability to listen to others as they speak and respect their ideas and contributions. -Self-esteem is developed as they feel important and respected. Cognitive -Concepts such as date days of the week weather numbers alphabet math and science facts etc. are shared and repeated for the children to aid in the retention of new information. -In spending time with an encouraging teacher children are more likely to find the desire to learn. Music and Art -Playing instruments encourages self-expression and confidence to create new sounds. -Singing offers the opportunity to express and relate to ones emotions. -Singing provides musical learners a successful way to retain information. -Dancing helps children to understand rhythm balance movement and musicality. Circle time is a time and place for children to express themselves, explore their world, learn about relationships, and grow within a caring welcoming group. It should spark imaginations, lend to reflection on new things learned. Circle time should always be fun and engaging.
