Split squats are a simple and great exercise with loads of benefits. 1 It's a knee dominant exercise meaning we'll see an increase in strength primarily in the quadriceps and the glutes.... 2 Due to the split stance position there is an added stability aspect to it as well. That forces you to engage your core in order to not lose your balance resulting in better core strength. This will also improve your balance as well. 3 This can also be used to improve grip strength, depending on who you are working with. However, improving grip strength is not the main purpose of this exercise so make sure that it does not become a limiting factor for yourself or your clients. . . . . . Unilateral strength is something that is often neglected. I neglected it as well for a long time until reading Michael Boyle's book "Functional Training for Sport," where he says that majority of the things we do are in a unilateral stance. Which is very true, walking, running, sprinting, ect. From a grappling stand point, we are in a unilateral stance majority of the time. Whether we are wrestling or trying to pass guard in bjj. That being said, improving unilateral strength can directly transfer to your sport or simply your day to day life. One of my favorite exercises as of late is the banded lateral squat!!! This is a great one to help improve hip extension, which if you're like me and have a messed up hip from grappling you will really enjoy this. The band also helps improve isometric strength in the adductors as you have to resist the band from pulling your leg away from your body. ...
