In June of 1893 so many things were going in the world.. Specifically, Massachusetts.. The Borden Case started on June 5th and would continue till the 22nd of June. You remember a place in our history books called Ford’s Theater? Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14,1865 at Ford’s Theater. This was just one of many tragedies. On this day in 1893, three floors of Ford's Theater collapsed, killing 21 clerks and 105 suffered injuries. Several died ...from their injuries over the following days and three years. This was all due to a support pier in the basement collapsed. The floors above were supported by iron beams, which rested on columns, which rested on the brick piers in the basement. When the one pier gave way, a 40 foot section from all three floors collapsed down. On June 13th, Washington issued a Military Court of Inquiry of the collapse. The surviving clerks, furious over the loss of their brethren, used this opportunity to lay the blame on their despised chief, Colonel Ainsworth. Ultimately, it was determined one of the piers had given way during excavation in the basement for the electric-light plant, probably due to inadequate bracing. To those who gave their lives for our Freedom, we Thank and Remember You. Did you know thatsome records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865? Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. But, became an official federal holiday in 1971. On this day, May 22, 1846, the Associated Press was founded in New York City. Five newspapers teamed up to share the cost of transmitting information regarding the Mexican-American War. And for 175 years world news is constantly at our finger-tips.

May 1910 Halley's Comet created such a panic due to French astronomer Camille Flammarion detected cyanide gas in its tail. Once the comet passed over and life resumed as normal. But, as it was happening people stood on mountains, tall buildings and out in fields watching and event that would only happen once in a life time. Maybe twice... For those who were able to see Halley's Comet in 1910 they may have been alive in 1986. The next time the ol' girl will be back around will be 2062.
