The advantages of twin scroll turbochargers are pretty well documented, however they do add a little complexity to the exhaust manifold design as well as the wa...stegate integration. To get the full benefit of a twin scroll turbocharger the individual scrolls need to remain separated right up to the point that the exhaust gas reaches the turbine wheel. This makes integrating the wastegate tricky since the wastegate also needs to bypass exhaust gasses from both scrolls in order to control boost. Doing this with a single wastegate traditionally results in a ‘leak’ between the two scrolls, negating some of the advantages the twin scroll offers. While it’s possible to add a divider up to the wastegate valve to maintain separation, this adds complexity to the fabrication. Arguably a superior solution is to use twin wastegates as shown here. This involves using a separate wastegate on each scroll to maintain scroll separation. The downside of course is the extra cost for a second wastegate, as well as a few more considerations around packaging and plumbing in a tight engine bay. Want to learn how to tune EFI?
