The day has finally arrived. On Tuesday we open Oklahoma City’s only night shelter where you can come as you are. No requirements. You can bring your pet and yo...ur belongings. In technical terms this is called a low-barrier shelter. We call it a place to feel welcome and safe. Not only does this align with our values, it is a best practice to have a place where people can begin their transition out of homelessness. We see this building as a place that will facilitate what really matters: the relationship and trust required for that work. We have 140 beds. 96 for men, 28 for women, and 16 split between four family suites with a family common area. We have short and long-term storage. We have a pet hotel and wash station. We’ll have clean linens and an encouraging note from someone to read when you settle in. You can come one night or as many as you need to. For however long it takes we will walk alongside you and when you are ready we have the resources to help you take the next right step. We’ll provide connections to housing and referrals for treatment. Aren’t we just enabling people to live a life on the street? Will they really make changes to their life if we don’t make it a requirement to access our services? If an experience of homelessness is not a part of your story, as it is not of mine, these are hard to answer. I consider what it would be like to get an ID, find a job, be sober, leave my belongings, give up my dog, all while trying to figure out how to feed myself and my family tonight. I imagine my focus would be on our immediate needs, not program requirements. We created a place where people can come without requirement because we believe there must be a place in our community that simply starts with Yes. If all you hear is No where do you begin? If you are turned away at every door, where do you go? We believe we are a community that should have a least one open door. We also believe this door should open into a place thoughtfully designed, expertly built, and beautifully curated, just as we hope a place would be for any family member or neighbor we would host. So now the work begins. It will be hard. We won’t have all the answers but we are committed to starting with Yes and going from there. We are committed to keeping this building open, well maintained, well funded, and well operated. We know we will learn so much. Thank you. Thank you for encouraging us, for joining us, for supporting us. We are just one organization. We cannot solve this issue on our own. However, we are grateful for the opportunity to join many others as a subject matter expert and an implementer of best practices. We say often this is a community issue and it deserves a community response. Thank you for joining us in one part of this community’s response. Update: To connect with us about volunteering you can go to our website and we will follow up with you from there!
