I loved to read as a child. But the older I got the less time I had to read for fun. I’d read for the sake of homework, book reports, reading challenges, and ...5-page essays. I’d read textbooks and histories and classics from the Western canon, all assigned by teachers. But I never read for the pure joy of itnot even as an English Lit majoruntil after I graduated from college. Conventional schooling conditions us to believe that learning is work instead of play. We learn to associate education with toil and suffering and something we just have to get through. Regardless of how interesting the content or exciting the lesson might be, the coercion and the compulsory nature of schooling just kills a child’s joy. That’s why I’m so thankful for unschooling. The lesson of unschooling is that learning is rooted in play, delight, autonomy, relationship, and self-direction. It’s not something to be avoided but actively pursued because there’s intrinsic motivation rather than external control. Unschooling, simply put, is a liberatory practice for ourselves and our children. I’m looking forward to talking more about how Unschooling is an Act of Resistance at the SDE weekend this Sunday!
