We have been closely monitoring the progression of the COVID-19 virus throughout our state. As of this writing, there are currently 67 confirmed cases in Oklahoma. Of those confirmed cases, 39 are within the two counties where the majority of our patients live. While our community has endured many hardships, this particular virus has a much higher hospital admission potential than others we deal with every year. As many as 20% of the people afflicted by COVID-19, could end... up requiring hospitalization. In Oklahoma, we currently have 17% of those people with positive tests being hospitalized. Unfortunately, we are only seeing the initial cases of infection in our state, the numbers of people testing positive will continue to rise in the coming weeks, as will the numbers of those requiring hospital care. Because of the potential that this virus could overload or stretch the limits of our hospital care facilities in the coming weeks, we are following the recommendations of the CDC, the American Dental Association, the Oklahoma Dental Association and the Board of Dentistry of the State of Oklahoma and limiting procedures to emergency and immediately necessary treatment. While the temporary change in focus of dental professionals across the nation will not eliminate the spread or complications people will face from the virus, it is one step that we can do as a profession that will help to slow the spread and allow hospitals the valuable resources to keep up with their task of healing those that will require advanced care.
