The ministry of The Salvation Army can be summed up in one word, "Others." Numbers will tell things like how many people stayed in our emergency shelter, how many meals served, the number of classes offered to help people build resources and move out of poverty, food boxes given or financial assistance that kept the utilities on but numbers do not tell the whole truth. Taking just one day, let me tell you the rest of the story. We opened our doors to a scared, elderly man ...in crisis proclaiming he just wanted to die. Others. Immediately he was the most important thing. Staff surrounded him, encouraging him he would get help while others were in the building praying for him until help arrived. Throughout the day there was conversations with guest in shelter pointing them to resources, offering help, simply having conversations to validate their value. Each one special, their needs important and our pleasure to come alongside of them right where they are. Others. To the last conversation I overheard a staff member engaged in with a client seeking help with a utility bill. This happened a few minutes past our closing time. This encounter was closing after the woman received help with her bill, a food box being prepared for her, and she turned to tell our staff member, "thank you for the help but what you really gave me what I needed more, a pep talk. To hear simple steps I can take to help my situation, and that I am doing the right things and most of all there is hope. I had lost hope. It has been a tough year. I'm leaving with hope, that is the best thing you have helped me with." Others. So to every supporter of the ministry we express our deep gratitude that with your help "others" are helped.
