2 July is celebrated as Founders Day in The Salvation Army as we remember the date of the first tent meeting in Mile End, east London. A tent meeting and the de...dication of Catherine & William Booth commenced a unique ministry that is alive today as The Salvation Army in 132 countries. May their surrender and obedience to God inspire us to respond in the same way. May their wholehearted commitment to the mission captivate us to be sold out for Jesus and the holistic Gospel. Today is not about venerating or idolising the Booths, but remembering what can result from lives surrendered to God. William Booth famously said God shall have all there is of William Booth. Will you change his name to yours and make that same declaration? What will happen in your life, your community, your nation, and the world when you let God have all there is of you?

He is TRUSTWORTHY, or worthy of our trust. We try our hardest to control our health, our income, our influence. Time alone will prove that we’re all weak. Out of control. But the power of the gospel rests in the truth that we don’t have to be in control. God is. We don’t save ourselves. He saves us. ... We don’t design our destiny. We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall (Prov. 16:33, NLT). Can you add one day to your life by worrying? Jesus says, Nope. Spend today focused on proclaiming the gospelthat’s where real power lies. See more

The LORD God said to the serpent. . . . I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel (Genesis 3:14-15). Even though God was brokenhearted after the fall, He spoke these words of hope. The serpent’s head was going to be crushed. Now, with the help of history on our side, we know that when God said that the serpent’s head would be crushed, He was looking ahead. He was talking about Jesu...s and His death on the cross. Satan did in fact strike Jesus’ heel; He was crucified with nails driven through His feet. But Jesus giving His life in our place removed any claim the enemy had on our souls. It was a head-crushing blow. Jesus’ death meant Satan lost all authority over us. And even though Satan managed to get Jesus killed, He didn’t stay dead. His resurrection is the ultimate defeat of sin and death. It’s a victory that those of us who believe in and follow Jesus get to share in. When we feel attacked by the enemy, we can remember God’s victory. When we feel tempted to give into sin, or shame, or guilt, we can remember that Jesus died to take the weight of all those things. We can remember that the battle has been won, and the victory is in Jesus. Is there a sin or mistake you’re struggling with? A battle you feel like you can’t win? Pray today that God would remind you of His victory. Lean into Him for the strength to stand in this battle. See more

The serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made (Genesis 3:1a). So man and woman were delights to the heart of the God of the universe. That great love was so beautiful that it sparked jealousy in the spiritual realm. The enemy would not have it. So how could the serpent hurt God? By getting the ones He loved to doubt His heart. And that’s exactly what happened. God’s creation declared, God is so good! And Satan asked God’s friends, Is He rea...lly? Sadly, we know what happened next. Adam and Eve distrusted God’s heart, and just like that, the rhythm was lost. It was felt nearly immediately by God’s friends. Where the lifeline of security once flowed, shame sunk deep in their souls. But God wouldn’t allow it to remain. He loved us too much to leave us separated from Him. In order to fix what had been done, God would have to send His Son to die in our place. That’s how deep God’s love for us goes. He would pay even the highest price to be close to us. And He did, in Jesus Himself said: Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13). Friendsthat’s us. We are God’s friends, and as Jesus said, no greater love exists anywhere. Think today about what it means that God calls you friend. God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). In the Garden of Eden, God was close to His friends. He, the God of Heaven, walked with them on earth. The Garden of Eden was where heaven met earth. It was sacred space. Later in the history of God’s people, God would direct them to build a Tabernacle, a place where He would dwell among them. Heaven on earth, more sacred space. Then, the Temple became a more permanent place where God lived among His people and they could meet with Him. Again, heaven on earth, a sacred space. But even though God could come close to His people, it was not enough. God wanted more. The next part of our history is that Jesus came to live among us. He was God with us. John tells us that the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1:1). Made his dwelling can also be translated to mean tabernacled among us. Heaven on earth, a sacred space among us. But Jesus didn’t stay. He had come to earth to give His life to set us free. Then He rose again and went to Heaven. We were free, but God wanted to remain close. So, He did something incredible. He Himself came to live inside His people through His Holy Spirit. And in that came the ultimate closeness. The ultimate temple, the ultimate sacred space. God had been painting pictures of His desire for closeness all throughout His people’s history. And now, we live in the gift of that closeness by walking with His Spirit in us.
