Ok, been a while since I've posted anything here but we acquired some neat old history as most of you know we collect a lot of antiquities. This is a picture of an Austrian Lorenz rifle found by a Colorado rancher near the sand creek battle site in the early part of the last century. For those of you unaware The Sand Creek massacre (also known as the Chivington massacre, the Battle of Sand Creek or the massacre of Cheyenne Indians) was a massacre in the American Indian Wars... that occurred on November 29, 1864, when a 675-man force of Colorado U.S. Volunteer Cavalry[3] under the command of U.S. Army Colonel John Chivington attacked and destroyed a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho in southeastern Colorado Territory,[4] killing and mutilating an estimated 70163 Native Americans, about two-thirds of whom were women and children. The location has been designated the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site and is administered by the National Park Service. The gun is in poor shape as to be expected and has slash marks from a saber along the stock. We do not know if the rifle was Indian or part of the Cavalry as this was a very common firearm for the time period.
