ON THIS DATE: MARCH 25TH MASONIC DAILY DEVOTIONAL: The order has at all times been careful to explain that Masonry is NOT a religion. It has denied the fact over and over again, and insisted that it was a lodge or brotherhood, and in no way did, nor was it intended to, take the place of the church in a man's life. It is claimed that Masonry is universal, its tenets such that they can be subscribed to by Christian, Jew, Mohammedan and Buddhist alike, and all may meet in broth...Continue reading

ON THIS DATE: MARCH 24TH MASONIC DAILY DEVOTIONAL: The three great lights are the Square, the Compasses and the Volume of the Sacred Law, the Bible. The Square represents, and is almost synonymous with good conduct. It is within the Square that the whole Craft is said to be ordered. The Compasses express the bounds of our daily lives, the full circle of our actions. The Volume of the Sacred Law, being considered the word of God, is a clear source of inspiration and instru...ction as to how we should try to order our own existence. All this we know, but think for a moment on the significance of their positions when we first see them. The Compasses lie within the confines of the Square and are dominated by it. Both of these things rest resolutely on an open page of the Volume of the Sacred Law. These Great Lights and the lessons they teach are surely enough to see us safely through to that bright eternal day. MASONIC BIRTHDAYS: Happy 166TH Birthday Brother Andrew Mellon, founder of Mellon Bank and Secretary of the Treasury born in 1855 Happy 147TH birthday Brother Harry Houdini - magician and escapologist born in 1874. Happy 119th Birthday Brother Thomas E. Dewey, New York Governor and Republican Presidential nominee twice born in 1902 MASONIC TRIVIA: Why do we say Master Masons wear their aprons in the shape of a square? You can clearly see it is a rectangle not a square. In ancient stonemasonry, a square was any object composed of right angles. A parallelogram with equal length sides was called a "perfect square". If the length exceeded the width, it was called an oblong square. Dr. Edward Jenner, in 1789 discovered the vaccination process against smallpox. He was worshipful master of Faith and Friendship Lodge #270 in Berkeley, England at the time. Missouri’s first Confederate Capitol was the Masonic Building in Neosho, MS. From here the legislature passed the Act of Secession. USA General Thomas Benton, also Grand Master of Iowa, ordered Federal troops to protect Albert Pike’s home and prevent the library from being burned, when his troops took Little Rock,

ON THIS DATE: MARCH 22ND DAILY MASONIC DEVOTIONAL: We have a duty to our much-maligned Brotherhood to be exemplary in our conduct, for we are the visible face of Freemasonry. Freemasonry will be judged by what we, as Freemasons, do. We should be mindful of this every day, every moment and so order our actions as to be a credit to the institution of which we claim to be so proud.... But that is not all. Like any system designed for the betterment of mankind, Freemasonry is useless unless it is lived. The precepts that it teaches have no meaning until they find expression in our daily actions. The true secret of Masonry is to be found here; in a life well lived, in a heart devoid of all malice and in a conscience clear in the knowledge that, I have tried my best. ON THIS DATE: MARCH 21ST MASONIC DAILY DEVOTIONAL: When we enter Freemasonry, we take a great deal on trust although we may have read something about the institution or spoken to friends at least those who signed our petition there is a moment of great aloneness just before we enter the Lodge to receive the benefit if initiation. It is a moment when all our privileges of rank and fortune in the ‘outside’ world avail us nothing. It is a moment of doubt, perhaps even fea...r, when we wonder, deep down, what are we getting into. Will Freemasonry be all that we expect? Is it really the noble and honorable institution it professes to be or are we about to enter on a path that will take us away from our chosen course of self-betterment? Thinking back on that moment, we can discover that doubt, questioning is a necessary step that drives us back onto the bedrock of our faith and trust. And though faith, in God’s name, we move forward, secure and confident that it is He who guides our steps to this door, at this time. MASONIC BIRTHDAYS: Happy 149th Birthday Brother Florenzi Ziegfeld, noted theatrical producer and member of Accordia Lodge 277, Chicago born in 1869 MASONIC TRIVIA: In 1818, George Mifflin Dallas, 11th Vice President of the US, Grand Master of PA became a Freemason. Bernard Pierre Mangam, Marshall of France and Senator was appointed Grand Master of the Grand Orient of France and served from 1862 to 1865. This is unusual because he was not a Mason. He was appointed by Emperor Napoleon III. The letters of the English word GOD are the first three letters of Hebrew words for beauty, strength, and wisdom. G in Gomez, O in Oz, D in Dabar. Francis Stephens, the Duke of Lorraine, received the first two Masonic degrees in 1731 in a special lodge convened at The Hague, Holland, becoming the first known royal freemason. Later he received the third degree in England. In 1735 renounced his title.
