This piece is an original Carved Face image from the center pole of the Delaware Big House north of Dewey, Oklahoma. The Big House was the main religious building of the Delaware Indians, where they held annual ceremonies to thank the Manitous for the good fortune of the last year and to pray for protection in the next year (Manitou was their word for spirit or deity). This was a symbol of the Supreme Forces with the red and black coloration representing life and death. It is 15 tall, 9 wide, and has been part of the museum collection since 1953. #MuseumFindFriday #DelawareTribe
